Hello out there. I'm in one of those states that hasn't yet had a case of H1N1 human-adapted swine flu. I decided that waiting for a vaccine or drug that has problems is not a good plan. Our health department is not proactive. Being a herbalist with 30 years of experience and education, I know there are lots of simple things to add to home care treatment. Lots of folks won't like that but Congress passed the DSHEA law in 1994 and Congress held alternative medicine hearings in February 2009 to learn from the experts how alternative medicine can help solve our health care crisis.

So I'm gathering some parents for an open public meeting on Mother's Day to inform and start small educational and support groups for parents.
I would appreciate your thoughtful feedback. Please feel free to use this information for your friends or community. I apologize if I've stolen phases from blogs and sites without mentioning them. It was too much to hyperlink everything.
I guess this is where I add the extended text? Not sure what that is for. Here goes.

Let's say you are one of the lucky and prepared. You stocked enough basic provisions to SIP as the flu went through in wave after wave. Even when the infrastructure went down at times, you'd prepared to catch and purify rain water, cook with a solar oven, keep warm. Finally it's over, and you're safe. What now?

This diary is to share information about preparations for a pandemic, local to Scotland.
Edit to add: because Scotland is importantly different from the rest of the UK, e.g., because health is devolved. There is also a Preparation in UK diary.

So I went to the Pandemic Readiness Forum which was held at a local school auditorium. I present here some of the notes that I went away with---
There were about 200 or so good folks there, mainly older with concerns about how to protect their kids and
The multi-page flyer that was available at the entrance was a printout of the web pages from pandemicflu.gov, along with other various papers and information for all-hazards preparedness.
The first person to speak was the Dept. of Health's Emergency Planner for the region that I live in, and gave a 30 minute overview complete with PowerPoint slides. The talk was fairly fast, with no questions during the presentation. All of the guests were encouraged to write their questions on a card and the panel would address them at the end of the presentation.
A few of the facts that he presented were interesting as we grapel with triage and treatment areas during a pandemic.
Did you know: In 1918, all of the schools in the Peninsula area were closed immediately for up to 6 weeks at a time. within one week, they were converted to treatment facilities and all of the teachers were recalled to become caregivers for the sick. I found that to be an interesting concept, and one that could be considered today...
The state is preparing for a first wave to last up to 9 weeks, with the peak at 4-5 weeks, and all hospital facilities in the area will be completely inundated with sick patients.
He touched on the morbidity rate, which is expected to be far higher than normal, and spoke about facilities that will handle the deceased. This area has 28 "cooling" facilities (I assumed that meant places like ice rinks, etc.), 4 refrigerator trucks at their disposal, and 4 crematoriums. It's expected that some bodies may have to stored for up to a year, but he didn't go into any details as to why.
If a quarantine is needed, we have several military bases around our area---Navy, Air Force, Army, and two National Guard units. He stressed that the military WILL be used to enforce a quarantine...also, a mandatory quarantine will not work on large areas such as entire cities, but instead will be focused on areas such as sub-divisions and homeowner associations that can be handled easily.
