Complementary Currencies

Most of us are sure the next pandemic will be disruptive, and possibly very disruptive, even if it's not very deadly.

One reason for this concern is that food and other essential items travel a lot these days, and there are no stocks.  Globalisation and Just In Time delivery.  We just take it for granted.

We may not like the current state of affairs, but we might find ourselves in a very bad position if it abruptly slows down or stops.  Peak-oil would possibly do it more slowly than a pandemic.

It would be wise to "stop it ourselves", or at least have "alternatives so that we may go on, even if globalisation doesn't".

One alternative is to stock-up, not just in order to shelter in place, but also in order to mitigate disruption.  But, most likely, only a few folks will actually do it.

Another alternative is to grow food and energy closer to home.  But it's economically foolish to grow food when it's economically less expensive to import it from somewhere else.

Enter Complementary Currencies.

We've explored them previously.  Let's continue here.

Barter During the Pandemic
The idea of communities issuing a complementary currency is interesting but complex and requires considerable cooperation among those issuing, using, and redeeming the cc.  I have doubts about how acceptable a cc will be for commerce in a black market.  Those selling or trading for goods and services are probably going to want something of equal or greater value for the items they have on offer.  It is likely that black markets operators and patrons will be strangers to each other and neither party in a situation like this would be likely to accept cc in exchange for scarce real goods or services.

In my opinion, simple bartering will likely be the preferred and most common method of conducting commerce during a pandemic induced civil emergency and even afterwards for a period of time.  Black market trading will become widespread once the government exacerbates supply shortages by implementing price controls, which most will probably feel compelled to do for political reasons.

To the starving, a loaf of bread will be more valuable than paper money or gold. An important food source that many can take advantage of during the pandemic period is a home garden. Urban residents will be surprised at how much they can produce with only a little bit of space, even in a container garden on a balcony.  Having a small garden will provide your family with an important source of delicious and nutritious fresh vegetables. Whether you live in the city or the country you can grow quit a few healthy summer and winter vegetable that will be an important source of variety in the diet.  If you are able to grow more fresh produce than your family can eat, the surplus will be an excellent barter item to use for purchase of items you may be short of.

Canned meat (tuna, salmon, roast beef, and chicken in 6 to 8 oz sizes), multiple vitamins, and iron supplements are widely available now and inexpensive.  These products will be especially valuable during the pandemic and will command a high trading premium. Cash, gold, and silver will only be of value to those with a long-term prospective.  These people will accept them in exchange for goods and services because they are well prepared until the eventual end of the pandemic when things will return to normal.  The cash or gold price for high demand items like non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, spirits, beer, tobacco, condoms, tampons, toilet paper, batteries, weapons, and ammunition will be extraordinarily high because of these critical life sustaining, lifestyle, and home protection items will be very scarce.  Laying in a surplus of some of these items ante-pandemic over and above your family's needs, will leave you well positioned to trade for other scarce items you may need during the pandemic. This makes more sense to me than planning to rely on a cc.

not OR but AND, I guess
And CC might be used - in fact ARE being used - to foster local production of essential items before TSHTF.

Food gardens need seeds and know-how and compost.  And an ecosystem of people teaching each other, building some excess capacity, learning to teach, etc.

Side note: The author of "square foot gardening" wrote something about his first lesson: he went to what was supposed to be a real lesson with a real teacher, but no teacher came, so he suggested they could teach each other.  It reminded me of FW.

Anyway, CC done BEFORE might be a good thing.  I'll be travelling these days but I want to research it a bit.
